Athens Business Hours
Store and business hours tend to fluctuate depending on a number of factors. They depend on the time of year, the type of business, peak tourist times, the location, and when the stock exchange opens and closes. Most businesses are closed on public holidays, and some are closed during observances. We have a page on Public Holidays, so you may plan ahead and anticipate closures. Almost all businesses and stores are closed Sunday with the exception of businesses that operate during events and celebrations.
Some Businesses Open And Close When The Stock Exchange Does
Most non-tourist business will open at either 9:00am GMT, or when the stock exchange opens at 10:30am. They will tend to stay open until around 5:00pm GMT. More successful businesses will work from 8:30am to 5:00pm, whereas companies that wish to save on staff wages will close between 2:00pm and 3:00pm.
Athens Store Hours
Store hours are variable depending on the types of establishments you visit. For example, pubs and clubs will stay open until late, but shopping and tourist-related stores will close earlier.
Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, store hours are 8:30am to 3:00pm. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, store hours are 8:30am to 2:00pm. Some places will close between 5:00pm to 8:00pm, but it depends on the type of store you visit. Closing times also seem to be affected by the economic climate in Greece. For example, smaller businesses that have few staff, or family run businesses, may stay open a little later during tough economic times. On the other hand, banks and larger companies appear to be closing sooner. There are some businesses in Athens that only operate for half a day in order to save on staff wages.
Large department stores in Athens
Larger department stores and supermarkets will be open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 8:00pm. On Saturday, they tend to open at 8:30am and close at 3:00 pm. Most of the best places for shopping have extended hours, especially during the holiday seasons and peak tourist seasons. Stores and businesses in tourist areas are often open going into the afternoon, as well as long into the evening. In places such as Monastiraki and Plaka, the shops are open until 9:00pm, and some are open even later.
What About Tourist Attractions?
Almost all of them have their own website, so it is easy to find out which are open and when they are open. Below is an image showing you opening and closing times for most of the biggest attractions, but they are all subject to change, so you may be better off checking each attraction’s website individually before you make any plans.
