There are quite a few hostels in and around Athens but are less popular than B&B and hotels. They are cheap, provide the essentials, and are clean and well kept and functional. They do provide accommodation for a couple and a family room but generally they are intended for bigger groups of people to share a dormitory, up to 6 people. These dormitories are generally split into male and female and not shared. You don’t get the privacy you get in a B&B or hotel but especially for the youngsters it’s a good way to meet new people from different countries.

Facilities generally include a wash room that costs a couple of Euros to use and detergent is sometimes included. A bar that is open from morning till night. Most hostels will provide entertainment of some sort like, party nights, Karaoke, Quiz nights and special nights like New Year’s Day, Australia day and Valentines. Usually big games are showed on a large screen television live. A daily programme is normally put up so guests know what is happening. Hostels will sometimes plan adventure days like trips to Delphi, Nafplio or Sounio, these are full day coach trips planned and are a lot cheaper than using public transport.

Storage luggage can be arranged, it is normally free of charge on the day of your departure, but a small fee will be charged if long term storage is required. Public transport is generally not too far away from where hostels are located. In Athens centre most tourist attractions are within walking distance. Bus and metro stops are never far away in the city centre. Accommodation although basic, is usually good and clean. If you require long term accommodation then speak to the staff as this may be something that they are prepared to think about even if it’s not something they have done before.

Free wifi, tea and coffee along with free breakfast are normally included. A fully equipped kitchen is available but of course this will be shared with all guests at the hostel. Eating out doesn’t have to be expensive in Athens and there are many bars, cafes and restaurants in Athens to choose from. Hostels prices per night per person can start from about 10 Euros; again this depends on location and conditions in hostel, and amenities. But these are definitely a great way to be able to travel cheaply.
