A Unique And Magnificent Building
The Expiatory Church of the Holy Family is a Roman Catholic Church located in Barcelona, designed by Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926), and lovingly restored by the Barcelonan local government. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it was consecrated in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI, who turned it into a minor basilica, meaning it doesn’t have to seat a bishop, which also made it more available for tourists, visitors and worshippers.
Construction began in 1882. Gaudí became involved a year later, where he successfully combined curvilinear Art Nouveau forms with a gothic style. Gaudi worked on the church from 1883 right up to 1926, when he died at the age of 73. He designed the church, but only finished less than one quarter of it before he died. Private donations pushed the project forwards slowly, and it was put on hold when the Spanish Civil War began.
Already A Very Popular Tourist Attraction
The building was started in 1882, and is still under construction. Yet, since 2010, it has become world renown and has built quite a following. Its online reputation is fantastic, with outstanding reviews on Google+, Facebook, and Trip Advisor. People are awed and inspired by the building, its history, and the sheer level of detail in its design. It is a place you will remember for the rest of your life.
You will also get to visit and experience the Sagrada Familia museum. See Antoni Gaudi’s inspirational drawings and the plaster models he carved himself. There are pictures and photos showing the history of the church and its development. See how to basilica was built from the ground up, from its very beginnings to what we see today. Plus, you may see pictures and models that show what the building will look like when it is completed in 2026. See, hear and read valuable information about the life and career of the church’s designer Antoni Gaudi.
Go And See It While You Still Can
Construction restarted formally in the 1950s, and it was deemed half finished in 2010. At the current rate of construction, it is due to be completed in 2026. That is why many people are rushing to see it now before it becomes more expensive and more difficult to gain access. It will be fully completed in 2026 on the centenary of Gaudí's death, at which point you will have a hard time getting through the door.
